PNR stands for Passenger Name Record. It is a 10 digit number/code that is allocated to passengers for the purpose of travel record and database maintenance in Central Reservation System. This number also acts as a unique identifier in differentiating one ticket from another.
It contains complete journey details of the passenger which include:
Personal details like name, age and gender of the passenger.
Ticket details like train name and number, journey date, boarding station, journey up to station, class of journey, quota, etc.
Payment details (mode of payment, total ticket charges and transaction ID)
The PNR number gets generated only after all the above details are correctly entered in the system.
PNRs can also contain meal preferences and specific service requests like wheelchair for patients, etc. This code is very useful for passengers who do not get confirmed ticket at the time of reservation and need to check the status of ticket confirmation later on.
The 1st three digits vary depending upon the class of travel and the remaining 7 digits are simply unique serial numbers.
